There seemed to be a lot of conflicting information between the various handbooks, webpages. It didn't cause me any problems, but it was confusing. Also, Orhan Pamuk's memoir of Istanbul seems an odd choice for pre-tour reading. I didn't mind it as literature, but his tone seems more accurately to reflect "moody disenfranchised novelists the world over" than "all the citizens of Istanbul."

As an American woman, I was brought up to be polite to people when they speak to me. As a visitor to other countries, I like knowing what the social norms are. So knowing whether it is socially acceptable in Turkey to ignore the queries of shopkeepers or stop and politely refuse each one would be helpful information.

The roughest part was making the arrangements for our extension to Athens and back to Istanbul. Eventually we worked it out but if we had had more information before the trip we would not have had to contend with so much anxiety during the tour. My e-mailed questions to the office were answered promptly and fully. The trip recommendation not to buy souvenirs, carpets, etc., early in the tour (because we would become much better educated about Turkish crafts as we traveled, and wouldn't have to haul so much stuff for so long)was right on. Unfortunately, the minute we hit Istanbul it went out of our heads. We made some purchases we might not have made after a little more time in Turkey, and were consequently unable to make some purchases later in the trip that we would have preferred. If only you could print that part in flashing neon! Hopefully, if anyone reads this evaluation on the web page they will make a stronger mental note than we did. We arrived in Istanbul 2 days early hoping to ease our jetlag prior to the tour. If there were any similar suggestions for an easy-access place to stay or a low-keyed day trip outside of Istanbul for before the tour on any of the websites, I didn't notice it. It would be a nice addition to the information presented.

Cappadocia was a unique experience for me, and I suspect for everyone. I suggest you encourage future travelers to do extensive reaearch, in order to anticipate and appreciate what is planned for them. I was in awe so much of the time, that I failed to appreciate the moment sometime.

I also appreciated the recommended reading; Mango's biography on Ataturk, Birds Without Wings and Portrait of a Turkish Family introduced me to the Turkish culture and gave me some insight on the population exchange, Turkey's role in WWI and how the charismatic leadership of Ataturk created a modern Turkey.

I think the information was great - I think it would have been good for me to make up a schedule of the historical time line from the pamphlet in Turkey leaving space for my own comments in each area which I think might have helped me better understand the different eras and influences affecting the history in each area - there is just a lot of info. to try to retain.

No, I knew there would be a lot of stairs and walking. By the end of the trip I could go down stairs in an almost normal way....not something I was doing at the beginning of the trip. Perhaps the trip should be advertised as being good for arthritis!! An actual tour book for Turkey would be nice at some point!
