Ayse was very clear in her directions and explanations and helped everyone with their concerns from the beginning to the end. Because she was born and raised in Turkey she had a real passion for her country and passed that along to us. She was very warm hearted and made us feel comfortable right away. Selcuk couldn't have been better as a leader. Responses to questions about differences among sects of Islam could have been more nuanced, e.g. the difference between Shia and Sunni are much richer than the response that the Shia follow Ali.

Ayse is a perfect guide on this tour- she understands current politics of Turkey and Europe, and she also understands enough about us Westerners to put local customs and current events into context for us. She ran the tour extremely well - she repeated the day's agenda and important meeting times often, and that was very much appreciated by us since the days can run together on a busy tour like this one. She adjusted the agenda on a couple of days to accomodate people who weren't feeling well, and still got us around in good time. I would say she had just the right balance of leadership and sensitivity to lead the tour.

I think that Hasan faced a very difficult task bridging the cultural barriers. Informal mixing with the tour members could really help with this. He improved as the tour progressed, but because of language and cultural issues, this is a area for improvement.

He did not eat or chat with the group. However, he provided a feeling of safety and took care of our needs and kept us on track.

Lynn in Coupeville, WA, 2007 Hasan was approachable, knowledgable and informative. I thought he was wonderful overall. I would have liked him to stay with the group longer at Ephesus and give us more information. He lectured at the start of our trip in Ephesus and then let us go our own way. I found myself gravitating toward other english speaking guides in order to get more information about some of the sites at Ephesus. I did the same thing at the ancient christian churches in Cappadocia, that is eves drop on other english speaking tour guides.

He sometimes had sort of a military, "by the numbers" style -- but he did keep us on schedule, and we saw everything we wanted to see. His comments about the Turkish character were objective and very interesting. He's an excellent guide with a great sense of humor who knows how to deal with Americans.
